The 1stdibs Gallery at 200 Lex hosts an exhibition featuring the abstract sculpture and functional art by the artist James Bearden. The exhibition runs from January 10 – February 28, 2017 and is curated by Larry Weinberg of Weinberg Modern.
Bearden was born in the Southern region of the United States and raised in the Midwest. He earned a BA in Fine Art and a BA in Visual Communications from Grandview College in Des Moines, Iowa. Upon graduation, he worked in graphic design for twenty years. Seventeen of those years, he was Art Director for a large advertising agency based out of Des Moines. He received 52 Addy Awards.
His graphics background, which sharpened his artistic eye and overall compositional skills, aided him in adapting to a new medium in steel. In 2013, Bearden expanded his range to include functional works, including cabinets, lamps, and tables.
His work is held in many corporate, municipal and prominent private collections. In 2012, he began creating public work. The City of Clive, Lowe Art and Environment Center, Blank Park Zoo, The City of Ames and The City of Coralville, all located in Iowa, and The City of Plymouth, Minnesota have his work in their permanent collections. He has had temporary installations for public art programs throughout the Midwest.
