Jayne and Joan Michaels
Why use a designer?
A designer is a resource at locating products and services that go into the project (the architect, the contractor, the upholsterer, etc). They are experts at combining the products and services for the benefit of the client. Just as one would use an accountant to prepare your tax returns and a lawyer to prepare your will, a designer has the knowledge and training to facilitate the entire design process. But, perhaps, the greatest benefit is listening to clients to understand what they are really looking for and educating them as to design options.
Why shop the trade?
The trade offers exclusivity and service.
What is your most valued design tip?
Measure, measure, measure! You can’t measure enough.
What makes your style unique?
Our years spent in Italy bring a European sensibility to our work. Art is also a signature, as is our ability to combine 20th century antiques with contemporary furnishings.
Who is your design icon and why?
Franco Albini is our design icon. He was an Italian architect from the 1930’s-70’s. His work is disciplined, lyrical, timeless. We were fortunate to live in one of his buildings when we lived in Milan Italy.
If you were a piece of furniture, what would you want to be and why?
A daybed. It’s graceful and offers quiet contemplation.
Who is your favorite fashion designer?
Rick Owens
What is your ideal getaway/escape?
Amagansett, Long Island.
What is your favorite movie set?
Jacques Tati “Mon Oncle”
If you could live in a different time period, when would it be and why?
Joan and I both love the Edwardian period. It was a time of gentility and growth. The modern era was approaching and women were awakening.
Name three things you cannot live without:
A sense of humor, Each other, Curiosity
What is your greatest indulgence?
Our dogs, they are spoiled (but in a good way).
