Why use a designer?
It is a wonderful way to create a unique environment suited to your lifestyle and to get enjoyment from your home. It is also the best way for the consumer to get the most out of their space and avoid costly mistakes. One mistake can more than pay for the designer’s fees in most cases. A designer who understands his client can be a timesaver by editing the many choices available and presenting ones that suit the client’s taste, needs and budget.
Why shop the trade?
It is a way to make your home completely personal and avoid the packaged look of most of what is available at the retail level. Trade sources are always being updated, showing the newest styles, colors and fabrics as well as highlighting classics in a new way.
What is your most valued design tip?
I like to understand the client’s needs and wish list, so the initial interview is extremely important. Communication is a key element in the process with lots of listening on my part. In addition, I always take cues from the architecture itself. The overall feel of the room should address the configuration of the space (scale and orientation to the outdoors), available natural light, and of course how the room is to be used.
What makes your style unique?
There is a sense of serenity that is evident in all my rooms no matter what style I’m working with. I also use a painterly approach to color and love to work with colors that create a wonderful layered effect. My use of luxurious materials adds to the overall feel of relaxed elegance.
Who is your design icon and why?
Jean-Michael Frank; His pared-down interiors were far ahead of his time. The combination of simple and elegant materials were unheard of prior to his projects.
If you could live in a different time period, when would it be and why?
Paris in the 20’s. It was an amazing time with an abundance of creativity in many fields at the same time; fashion, fine arts, literature, photography and interiors of course.
What is your greatest indulgence?
A relaxing evening with friends; relating together and enjoying fine food, wine and scintillating conversation.
