Weinberg Modern brings Mid-Century Antiques to the New York Design Center

May 19, 2010

The New York Design Center is pleased to announce the addition of WEINBERG MODERN to its impressive list of showrooms at 200 Lex. Located on the fourth floor, the showroom boasts mid-century modernist furnishings. Weinberg, whose name you might recognize from "Cindy’s Salon" on the Interior Design website, or the esteemed Lin-Weinberg Gallery downtown, can be deemed an expert in vintage modernist furnishings. A recent exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York, “The Future at Home: American Furniture, 1940-1955” was culled from Weinberg’s own collection.

Currently in the showroom are pieces dating from the 1930’-80’s, including a 1960’s massive brutalist coffee table of hewn oak and wrought iron by artisan/blacksmith Harry Balmer; a folding Gio Ponti chair from the early 1970’s; and a rare and early metal table lamp with metal shade by Josef Frank, made in Austria for Haus & Garden c.1928 (be sure to visit the showroom quickly if any of these pieces interest you, there’s a fast turnover with these one-of-a-kind antiques!). In addition to the furnishings, the showrooms’ bookshelves are lined with rare design and architecture books from this extraordinary era, with a selection available for purchase.

Weinberg has been buying, selling and collecting mid-century design for almost two decades and has been successful in rediscovering unusual and hard-to-find pieces. “The challenge, really, is to constantly seek pieces you haven’t handled, or possibly even seen, before,” says Weinberg. “This keeps your eye in play, and keeps things dynamic and fresh. These are qualities I’m drawn to in mid-century design. Having a showroom again gives me a chance to work with clients and colleagues, and a place to exhibit—I’m planning an exhibition for summer, and another one for the fall.”

Now with a platform to share his collection, WEINBERG MODERN houses nearly a hundred objects and several dozen pieces of furniture from Weinberg’s inventory (which can be seen on www.weinbergmodern.com). Weinberg is also able to use the showroom as an office; with his desk cleverly hidden behind an Eames screen, you can often find Weinberg hard at work researching and blogging (Weinberg’s blog entries for Interior Design Magazine are posted every Thursday).

Visit the 4th floor to see Weinberg Modern’s constantly changing selection and recent acquisitions.
