Rhode Island School of Design’s Textile Department Showcases Graduate Students’ Work in Exhibition at New York Design Center on June 16

Six RISD undergraduate students along with six RISD second-year students presented their individual selections of work in the David E. Harden Conference Room at the NYDC. For the second year in a row, the students surpassed people's wildest imaginations, showcasing diverse bodies of work that exemplified the development of their prestigious program. The student’s projects, largely hand produced, spoke to the viewers through pattern, shape, color, structure and originality.

"The textiles on exhibition are truly magnificent this year! Can you believe he actually grew crystals directly onto the fabric?" exclaimed Sherri Donghia, pointing to a student’s project adorned with organic crystals. This one-day event brought a great buzz to the NYDC, highlighting work that began last fall in the Rhode Island School of Design's Textile Department.

The first "Sherri Donghia Achievement Award" was awarded to Nami Minaki, MFA 2010 for her inspiring upholstery textile titled Inside Outside. Her geometric patterned jacquard woven fabric illustrates structure in her piece and the layers form distinctive depth. Nami’s project will be on display in the NYDC café (1st floor).
